He was a big influence on Rory Gallagher, "as the crow files" and he wrote Steamy Windows for Tina Turner. You should check out his album Tony Joe , great tracks on it.... Stud Spider being one that comes to mind
Hi! Always LUVED this song! Peaked at # 8 on US charts (his only Top 10 Hit). He has 3 other Top 100 hits. Great Southern "story telling" songs. This is off his 1969 "Black & White" LP, and although this is the "highlight", rest of LP tells great stories too. Have the LP as MP3, and willing to share. Contact @ 29musicman@gmail.com
If you find that all links to an album are dead, please leave a comment, and I will fix it. Try all links in the post before reporting, I will not reupload if there is a live link.
Too young, I'll bet.
ReplyDeleteI'm 62 and remember him like it was yesterday.
Lately I don't often think of myself as "too young", but I guess you are right...

ReplyDeleteBecause you weren't on planet Earth in 1969? I was only 11 in '69 and I remember it.
ReplyDeleteNot that far away from that C.C.R. thang.
ReplyDeleteWell yes, I wasn't - but why isn't he more famous? I know plenty of people who were dead before I was born...
ReplyDeleteI really like that sound. CCR is a good reference point, but to me he sounds more like Slim Harpo and other "swamp blues" people off Excello label.
check out his track, "soul francisco"! really good white boy blues with a rockabilly twang.
ReplyDeleteThe gators got yo granny!
