Reup: Best of Cymande

Amazon review: Short-lived but legendary, Cymande is oft-compiled on funk assemblages, but this CD of their first two LPs is altogether necessary, even if the music moves away from tight beats into Rasta-folk toward the end. Cymande's reputation has grown considerably over the last twenty years. Featuring a multi-national crew with a strong Caribbean influence, the band produced a few hits in the early seventies, then disappeared. But the epochal "Brothers On the Side," and the ingeniously structured "Fug" contain a subtlety and tension lacking in all but the best bands of the era.

Funky 16 Corners: Their music was a sophisticated mixture of American soul and funk, African pop, Latin sounds, rock and all of the various and sundry intersections of those sounds. A close listen to their first LP is like a drive through Harlem in the early 70’s with your car windows down, letting snatches of Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Santana and a thousand lesser groups (woven securely into the fabric, but essentially lost to the ages) drift through the windows and into your ears. There are elements of early-70’s prog-cum-stoner rock guitar, hard drums, jazzy bass and horns as well as a bedrock of polyrhythmic percussion.

Tabou Combo - New York City (1974)

Here's an album I am seriously digging lately. A prime example of Haitian konpa style, this was recorded live in New York. I think this album came out under two different names (and possibly resequenced?): as 8eme Sacrement and as New York City.

Review: The group's relentless, high-energy style knows no language barrier. Singing in English, Spanish, French or their native Creole, Tabou serves a hot mix of grooves and textures with multiple roots, including a strong dose of the Dominican Republic's national dance music, Merengue. In addition, they offer up Haiti's dance-till-you-drop carnival music, rara, the hypnotic drums of Haitian voodoo rituals. The quadrilles and contra-dances from Haiti's French colonizers join funk from the American soul era. The music includes the feel of West African Soukous topped with bright piano riff and the brassy sound of an all-American horn section. @

Cult Cargo - Belize City Boil Up

UPDATE: Link removed upon the label's complaint. Go buy it!

Dusty Groove review: An amazing world of music -- rare funk, soul, reggae, and other grooves from Belize -- all beautifully compiled in the rich Numero Music style! We're really stunned by the set -- as we had no idea at all that Belize had anything going on at this level -- and the collection is an amazing surprise to our ears, filled with new delights at each turn, and clearly marking Belize as a new funky capitol on our ever-expanding map of musical understanding. Numero really outdid themselves with this package -- going far beyond their already-great collections of work from the Bandit and Capsoul labels -- to dig up a range of tracks that have never really made it out to the world at large, but which bubble over with influences from American funk and soul at the time.

Colombia! The Golden Years Of Disco Fuentes, The Powerhouse of Colombian Music 1960-1976

Soundway continues chronicling tropical funk on its latest compilation, this time focusing on Columbia's greatest record label, Disco Fuentes. Founded in 1934 by Antonio José Fuentes, the imprint captured the long evolution of the music from the country's Caribbean coast, including the especially fertile period of cross-pollination reflected on this disc. Traditional cumbias, forrós, and fandangos were invaded by funk, blues, soul, salsa, West African highlife and rock in the 1960s, and the result was some seriously unpredictable and often wildly psychedelic music. Wganda Kenya's "Tifit Hayed" - a crazed Afro-Latin blow-up that sounds almost avant-garde for the way its rhythm is built and dominates the arrangement - is a good example of the rhytmic power of some these tracks. Every song features armloads of auxiliary percussion and hard-hitting horns, and Soundway has done a fantastic job of telling the story and restoring the music, as usual. This is a great companion to last year's excellent Panama! compilation. - Joe Tangari for Pitchfork

Africa 100 (Afrobeat Box) #1

A couple of years ago, Pitchfork ran a massive feature on Afrobeat called The Indestructible Beat by Joe Tangari. It had an overview of the style and a track-by-track annotation of 100 best afrobeat songs as picked by the author. You are probably thinking: reading about it is nice, but having the music itself to go along with the article would be much better... In the spirit of a true music fan, the author, Joe Tangari - memorize that name so you know who to thank - hand-picked, ripped and compiled all cuts mentioned in the article into a 7CD megabox of ass-kicking afrofunk, which is available as a torrent (for instance, from here), and which I will also put up on Sharebee for your enjoyment.
All tracks are 192kbps. Each archive is separate; I had to keep them under 100mb, so some tracks are out of order. The original article is included.

Achilifunk - Gypsy Soul 1969-1979

Hugely entertaining, fun compilation by Barcelona DJ Txarly Brown of rumba-based Spanish pop music from the 1970s, which shows that interesting fusions between anglo-American and Spanish music were already well under way in the last years of the dictatorship and certainly before the 'nuevo flamenco' movement. Most of these tracks were unfamiliar to me, and listening to them for the first time was quite bizarre: all the familiar aspects of anglo-american 70s rock and pop are here - psychedelic, disco, soul and funk - but the rumba, flamenco and latin elements always prevail.
A few of the selections are predictable. The ever-reliable Peret is here on three tracks, and there's also a very good song from Los Amaya. But the highlights for me are the contributions from two female singers, Encarnita Polo (with my favourite track here, the bizarre 'Paco, Paco, Paco') and Dolores Vargas. Dolores was nicknamed 'la terremoto', the earthquake, and from her singing on these tracks you can tell why.
This track, El Garrotín (Youtube) by 70s Sevilla hippies Smash is typical of the eclecticism of the whole CD (dopey English psychedelic vocals clashing with a classic rumba refrain, in the same song). @

James White and the Blacks - Off White

An album by James Chance AKA James White, the ultimate funk-noise purveyor. One of the many projects to which Robert Quine lent his guitar skills after the dissolution of the Voidoids. Quine only plays on Almost Black Pts. 1+2 and Off Black, it's Jody Harris on the rest of the album.
This is an expanded edition, including an alternate mix of Contort Yourself, three live tracks from Soul Exorcism bootleg, and a rare "Chance-murders-christmas" recording. I can't help but brag that I have this on vinyl.
