UPDATE: Link removed upon the label's complaint. Go buy it!
Dusty Groove review: An amazing world of music -- rare funk, soul, reggae, and other grooves from Belize -- all beautifully compiled in the rich Numero Music style! We're really stunned by the set -- as we had no idea at all that Belize had anything going on at this level -- and the collection is an amazing surprise to our ears, filled with new delights at each turn, and clearly marking Belize as a new funky capitol on our ever-expanding map of musical understanding. Numero really outdid themselves with this package -- going far beyond their already-great collections of work from the Bandit and Capsoul labels -- to dig up a range of tracks that have never really made it out to the world at large, but which bubble over with influences from American funk and soul at the time.

Link doesn't work for me. Where are you located? I'm feelin' this blog on all sorts of ways. Stay up.

you are killing the work of legit small labels LIKE SOUNDWAY and others
ReplyDeleteHello Matt,
ReplyDeleteLet me point out a few things here. Firstly, this upload is not mine, I got it from here.
The "Colombia!" one is available on the web from many sources - I could've gotten it here or here; I can't find where I got the link that was posted, but it wasn't mine, either. I am not sure why you consider my activities to be so significant - most of the Soundway catalog is one Google search away, anyway; and what's not on the blogs is available on Soulseek, DC++, the torrents etc.etc.
Secondly, you may be correct assuming that people who download these albums would've otherwise gone and bought them from the store. I doubt that assumption. I believe that most people who download these would've otherwise never heard of them, and never bought them. There is a comment in the post directly preceding this one that proves exactly the opposite of what you are assuming: a visitor heard the album and now he is going to buy a copy for his parents.
Thirdly, I am not sure why you are taking the higher ground here. You are speaking for the copyright holders, presuming that they somehow profit from your mixes, but suffer from my shares. From your latest post it appears that the labels don't see that fine difference between your activities and mine.
I am sorry that you are seeing things this way. OTOH, I came across your blog earlier and downloaded some of your excellent shares - thank you! Too bad they expire so fast, though.
You should remove your links to Cult Cargo: Belize City Boil Up. This is the label (Numero Group) and you are doing an absolute disservice to the artists and compilers by allowing others to steal this music. None of us are millionaires. We rely on people actually buying this music, not good will and blog posts.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to go through the trouble of getting Blogger to shut you down because it's a waste of valuable time and resources. However, I have already contacted Megaup, share, etc and reported the infringement.
If you really wanted to share this with people, you'd buy ten copies and give them away to your friends and relatives. Instead you're taking what tiny profit is out there for these artists and throwing it in the streets.
Thanks.
The only things i know about Belize is whrer it is and that it's capitol is Belmopan. This music is the third thing. Reading this blog, listening to the music, i discover the world.
ReplyDeleteYesterday, i didn't know anyting about the country and the band, but today i'm ready to invite that band to play some concerts in Russia.
What i want to answer to:
>you are doing an absolute
>disservice to the artists and
>compilers by allowing others to
>steal this music. None of us are
>millionaires.
Guys, this is an advertisement of your music. If you playing music to have money - you'll never make money on THIS music. If you want popularity - you need to share.
IT was a big surprise to find this album on the net! I bought this album 2 years ago on a international book fair, on a belizean stand. Im sure this disc is one of my favorites on my musical archive lol!
ReplyDeleteI think the most important satisfaction for the "belize city boil up" is to be heard in many countries. Sharing this kind of music makes amazing musical connections between cultures. The fact remains, with tiny labels this music wont travel long distances. Sharing is the best way to meet new cultures. I've visited many musical blogs and now i can hear many music from all around the world! this way of sharing music is amazing!!! Music is the best human creation ever. Anyways, the labels just want to make money, the benefit for the musicians is shorter. SO, DONT STOP SHARING CULTURE!!!
they are not sellin' any
ReplyDeletesorry, Bárður, you are out of luck... unless you use Google to find it elsewhere
ReplyDeleteit's really not that difficult
try searching for the album title and the name of the second-most-popular sharing site
Hmmm go buy it.....? Where?....and what does it sound like?...hmmmmm...nah i don't throw away hard earned money on something i am not even sure i will like....Sorry Cult Cargo...eat bannana's for another 10 yrs.
ReplyDeleteI like how self righteous re-issue labels that pay no royalties to the artists on the comps they issue are. Very few labels like Numero Group pay for the rights to release this music. Though I must add that the excellent (and now, I believe, defunct) reggae label Blood and Fire did pay some royalties. Numero Group stinks of trust fund hipster vanity - "look at my bitchin' record collection".
ReplyDelete"Anonymous" - You clearly don't know anything about the modern reissue label. Soul Jazz, Jazzman, Numero, Kent, etc pay royalties and are some of the most respected in the field.
ReplyDeleteBefore spouting your mouth about something you have absolutely no fucking clue about, do some research. If you can't do that, keep it fucking shut.
does anyone have this link? this album is really hard to find and thanks to this label's dinosaur politics, it's now even harder.
ReplyDeleteGo to http://www.numerogroup.com/ you can order it from there. It isn't really that hard. The NumeroGroup's stuff is always lovingly packaged, loadsa detail, I got their Antenna comp, great stuff, with loads of the Factory singles artwork. While I have little sympathy for a lot of bootleg reissue labels, there a plenty attempting to add value. Respect.
ReplyDeleteHEY YOU STILL WANT TO HEAR IT
ReplyDeleteJUST GET IT AT -SOULSEEK-
LOVE YOUR BLOG BY THE WAY
AN FOR EVERYBODY ELSE COMPLAINING
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM YOU REALLY NEED VINIL!!! NO
SO WHATS THE BUZZ ABOUT TELL ME
EVEN THE NEW INDIE BANDS PRESS LIMITED LPS AND SHARE THEIR MUSIC
THATS THE WAY TO GO jACK
Fuck this album. Theres a million other artists giving songs and releases away to gain a foothold. Greedy, petty bullshit like this leaves me with a bad taste. Ptooie!
ReplyDeleteIn response to the criticisms made about blogs killing labels I think it's totally ridiculous. If it weren't for blogs like this I wouldn't know half the music I now love and through such blogs as this one I have made many many purchases from labels such as this one and Soundway for example, music I would simply never have known existed. I now have a part time job doing world music shows on my local radio station in Peterborough Uk and have a really big collection of albums such as these that I have now bought. Face it, people who are not interested in following music with passion would not be looking at these blogs in the first place and I know many people use them to discover new music to buy. Blogs like this are made by people who love music for people who love music, they are awesome. That is all
ReplyDeleteLabel may complains, but this review made me buy the disc...
ReplyDeleteI heard this album by hearing it via this download. I then BOUGHT it to support the label in their efforts at promoting this kind of lovely stuff. I assume and very much hope that they pass some of the profits on to the artists/composers. I would not have bought it had I not heard it here, simply because I did not know it existed.
