Africa 100 (Afrobeat Box) #1

A couple of years ago, Pitchfork ran a massive feature on Afrobeat called The Indestructible Beat by Joe Tangari. It had an overview of the style and a track-by-track annotation of 100 best afrobeat songs as picked by the author. You are probably thinking: reading about it is nice, but having the music itself to go along with the article would be much better... In the spirit of a true music fan, the author, Joe Tangari - memorize that name so you know who to thank - hand-picked, ripped and compiled all cuts mentioned in the article into a 7CD megabox of ass-kicking afrofunk, which is available as a torrent (for instance, from here), and which I will also put up on Sharebee for your enjoyment.
All tracks are 192kbps. Each archive is separate; I had to keep them under 100mb, so some tracks are out of order. The original article is included.

UPDATE: a visitor pointed out that track 214 (Petit Sekou) in the third archive is corrupted. You need to download it separately here:

  1. I saw this one too as a torrent. But you made life so much easier for a lot of people (and worth living :-)

Even for afrobeat collectors like myself there are some interesting things to discover on this boxset. For beginners this is simply great.

Thanks for promoting and keeping the music alive!

  2. Great blog! - thanks for making the torrent available as "regular" downloads. The best track, in my opinion, "Petit Sekou" by Bembeya Jazz National (track #214) seems to have been corrupted! Is there anyone who has an uncorrupted file? I would be exceptionally happy.

  3. Unfortunately, you are right - it is corrupted.
    Here is the good file:

  4. I'm the previous poster. Thanks for the prompt upload!! I will be able to sleep tonight :)

  5. Thanks, this an amazing post with brilliant stuff. Some time ago I found that Pitchfork article and was noting which songs I had and which not, well now I got the whole thing. Thanks!!!!

For all liking this at didn't stumble on voodoofunk yet, listen to this as a bonus to this post: (mindblowing music: "I kill you, don't worry about me!")

  6. Hello me again from above. Link doesn't seem to be complete, so here again Ferry Djimmy (linked from voodoofunk):

  7. Amazing doesn't seem quite enough. Neither does thank you, but here it is: Amazing! Thank you!

  8. thanks for this

  9. It's out there as a 700+mb torrent but all tracked seeds have it at 79% availability, if only someone with the full 7 albums would seed..........

  10. Hi. All the links seem to be dead. A lot of this stuff has been re-released in recent years, but a lot of it isn't available to the best of my knowledge, and I'd love to get it! Thanks. - Richard

  11. Given the uncertain situation around the file sharing sites, what with filesonic closing and megaupload getting closed, I am not ready to go through a massive upload like this to see it expiring in a few weeks or months. Try torrent.
